Look at China: Drones Make “Little Suns” Rise

With the drone propeller blades buzzing, a DJI Elf 300 drone with a special “l(fā)uminous tail” took off and rose to a height of nearly 100 meters, which looked like a bright “small sun” appeared in the night sky, illuminating a large area as bright as day. Under the “small sun”, power crews who have been long prepared rapidly climbed up the power pylons of dozen meters high to carry out construction work. This is what happened at 3:30 a.m. on 14 December at the power construction site in Boutou Village, Xingguo County, Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province, China.

This construction had to cross over more than two railways at the same time, making it the most difficult project ever undertaken by Ganzhou Electricity Supply Company. In order to reduce the impact on railway operation, the electricity supply company chose to convene personnel to carry out the work late at night. To be more precise, from 3:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m., when there are relatively few trains passing by. In the past, if a night construction was necessary, construction crews often used fuel electric lamps for lighting. However, this equipment can only be placed on the ground and therefore has a limited range of illumination, which makes it hard for construction crews to see things clearly at dozens of meters in the air.

In order to solve this problem, the drone, a technological device widely used in China, is applied in a new area. The construction crews can set lights underneath the drone and connected it to a generator. During the construction, the drone would hover around the electricity pylon and provide lighting for the construction crews. Under the illumination of a 900-watt light, every detail can be seen clearly, allowing construction crews to operate more safely and efficiently.

As Ganzhou Electricity Supply Company continues to carry out scientific and technological innovation, more and more novel, efficient and intelligent devices will be widely used in various fields, taking on a new and refreshing look. (Liuyiqun Zhulinyuan)
