Looking at China: Cold Wave Attacks Hydropower Plants to Ensure Safe and Stable Power Generation

Recently, a strong cold wave has persisted in China, with rain, snow, and ice suddenly appearing. In order to actively respond to rainy, snowy, and freezing weather, and ensure the safe and stable operation of the power grid, on December 16th, State Grid Jiangxi Zhelin Hydroelectric Power Plant issued the No. 13 blue rain, snow, and freezing warning. The warning response and emergency mechanism were activated as soon as possible, and proactive actions were deployed in advance, closely tracking weather changes, strengthening equipment monitoring and patrols, and increasing the gathering of emergency supplies.

The operation workshop of the hydropower plant has arranged the power generation operation mode reasonably in response to rainy, snowy, and freezing weather. The main transformer cooler has been switched to the winter process, with a focus on strengthening special inspections of outdoor equipment and facilities, as well as the icing of wires and porcelain bottles. The maintenance workshop conducts special inspections on the sealing and heating conditions of equipment such as switch stations and booster stations, and conducts infrared temperature measurement inspections on the joints and clamps of primary equipment. The hydraulic workshop temporarily strengthens the sewage discharge that may be affected by strong winds, and takes anti slip measures by laying straw bags at the inlet of Factory A and the flood control dock that are prone to ice. During the early warning period, the Zhelin Hydropower Plant actively carried out logistics support work such as communication network, material supply, and vehicle transportation, and arranged an emergency team of 65 people and 4 vehicles on standby.

At present, the real-time monitoring of the Zhelin hydropower plant shows no abnormalities, and the power generation operation is safe and stable, making every effort to ensure that the units can be started and powered up at any time during the peak winter power supply period. (Yu Xuchuan)
